When an excessive current flow exists, the thermal circuit protection device will automatically open, eliminating the flow of electricity. A fuse is the most common form of a thermal circuit protection device. The size of the internal element determines the ampere rating of the fuse. The element is activated by excessive heat, greater than what the fuse is rated for, caused by the over current state, thus melting the element and eliminating the flow of electricity. The end electrical component is then protected from the over current state. The fuse is a one time one use item. Once the fuse is blown, it must be replaced.
